One recent morning as I drove to work, the road ahead of me was still dark, and my headlights quietly guided the way forward. Out of habit, I glanced into my rearview mirror and was met with a sight that made me pause—a sky painted with gentle, beautiful shades of pink, as if God had carefully brushed each color into place. It felt peaceful, almost comforting, and for a moment I wanted to keep looking. But the longer I drove forward, the farther that beauty remained behind me. In that quiet moment, God stirred something in my heart. What we leave behind can be meaningful, familiar, and even lovely, but it cannot be our focus if He is inviting us to move ahead. We can appreciate where we’ve been, yet still trust that what lies ahead—though unseen—is worth continuing toward, as He leads us into the next season.

There is a passage of scripture found in Philippians 3:13-14 and it reads, “Brothers, I do not consider that I have made it my own. But one thing I do know; forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead, 14). I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus”. In this passage of scripture, Paul is offering wisdom by encouraging us to forget those things which are behind us and reach for or move towards what is before us. I could never reach for what is before me if my gaze is focused on the beauty that is behind me. What is before me might feel messy at first because it is something new and in some cases, it is the unknown. I still must move forward into what will oneday be beautiful too. The beauty might not have been discovered yet but it’s there, I just have to be brave enough to look for it in the new.

This brings me to a thought that settled gently in my heart the morning I noticed beauty in my rearview mirror. It was simple, yet deeply stirring: reach for the beauty in the light.
The light is whatever carries you through the dark—whatever steadies you when things feel uncertain, heavy, or lonely. No darkness is too deep, too thick, or too overwhelming for the light. Darkness does not have the authority to remain where light is invited. The moment light enters, darkness has no choice but to retreat.
And the truth is, you are not searching for light as if it is far away—you carry the light of Christ within you. His light lives in you, surrounds you, and gently calls you forward. There is a beauty in His light that we are invited to reach for in every season, especially the ones that ask us to let go and move ahead.
Moving forward is not always easy. There are seasons we leave behind that feel safe, familiar, and even beautiful in their own way. Sometimes, what we are walking away from feels almost perfect—comfortable and secure. And yet, even in those places, we can feel the quiet nudge that there is more… that we are being called onward. Without movement, even the most beautiful place can become a place of stillness that no longer grows us. And over time, that stillness can turn into stagnation. Stagnation can quietly settle into complacency, and before we realize it, we feel stuck—longing for something we haven’t yet given ourselves permission to step into. But there is an invitation here. A gentle, loving invitation to trust God enough to move forward—to believe that what lies ahead is not meant to harm you, but to grow you, stretch you, and reveal more of who you are becoming in Him.
Growth often lives in new beginnings. It meets us in unfamiliar places and unfolds as we take faithful steps forward. While it may feel uncertain, there is a deeper beauty waiting in the light ahead—one that requires trust, surrender, and courage to reach for so, reach for the light. Trust the One who placed it within you. And allow yourself to move forward, knowing that every step is leading you into greater depth, greater purpose, and a more radiant expression of His presence in your life.

So perhaps you’ve been glancing in your rearview mirror while trying to move forward, and the beauty of what you’re leaving behind feels both heavy and overwhelming.

Let this be your gentle reminder: the plans the Lord has for your life are good—always good, never meant to harm you. Even when moving forward feels difficult, what lies ahead of you is not less than what you’ve known, but part of something greater still unfolding.

You may be stepping away from a beautiful season, but you are not leaving it empty-handed. You carry it with you—in your heart, in your growth, in every lesson that shaped who you are becoming. Nothing you’ve lived through is lost.

In time, what feels so close in your rearview mirror will soften into a memory—still meaningful, but no longer something you need to cling to. It will become a stepping stone, gently leading you into what is next. So here is the invitation: lift your eyes. Trust the One who is leading you. And dare to believe that there is beauty ahead of you—beauty that is waiting, not behind you, but in front of you… ready to be discovered as you move forward.” I am praying that you will take a moment and relax in the light. Lay back, take a deep breath, and rest here. I’m so glad you are in this space with me. I am honored that I get to come alongside you on your journey. Let’s keep stepping into the light together.
